Short answer: a genuine Certificate of Analysis names an accredited lab, carries a batch or lot number that matches the label on your bottle, shows a test date, states the method used, and can be confirmed directly with the lab that issued it. If any of those are missing, the certificate proves nothing, no matter how official it looks.
Why a certificate can look real and mean nothing
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a lab report. It is also one of the easiest documents in the supplement world to fabricate: a PDF with a logo, a few numbers, and the word "PASS" takes minutes to make. The certificate is only evidence if it ties a specific batch of a specific product to a named, accountable lab. Everything below is how you check that chain.
The six marks of a genuine COA
- 1. A named, accredited lab. The report names the lab that ran it, and that lab holds ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. No lab name, or a lab you cannot find, is the single biggest red flag.
- 2. A batch or lot number that matches your bottle. The number on the COA must match the lot printed on the label in your hand. A certificate for a different lot tells you nothing about the product you actually bought.
- 3. A test date. Real reports are dated. A certificate with no date, or one several years old, is not evidence about the batch on the shelf today.
- 4. A stated method. Genuine reports name the technique used, such as HPLC for actives, ICP-MS for heavy metals, or a microbial screen. "Tested" with no method named is not a method.
- 5. Quantified results, not just PASS. A strong COA prints the actual measured values next to the limits, so you can see how close to the line the result sat. A bare pass or fail hides the margin.
- 6. A way to verify it. Many independent labs publish a verification portal or a report number you can look up on the lab's own site. If the issuing lab can confirm the report, it is real.
Red flags that a certificate was forged or altered
- No lab name, or a lab with no findable accreditation and no website.
- The batch or lot number is missing, or does not match the label.
- No test date, or a date that predates the product.
- Results shown only as PASS or FAIL with no measured values.
- Mismatched fonts, crooked alignment, or a flattened image where selectable text should be, all signs a document was edited.
- The seller shows a certificate but cannot say which lab issued it or how to confirm it.
How to verify one in under a minute
