Key findings
- 20,407 independent lab certificates are publicly verifiable across 9 certification programs. Most shoppers never see any of them.
- Certification is top-heavy: the 20 most-certified brands hold 7,193 certificates, 35% of the entire public record. The long tail of brands publishes little or nothing.
- 4,019 labeled sellers appear in the record, but only 1,174 maintain 2 or more public certificates. A single certificate is a snapshot; a testing program is a track record.
- Only 49% of public certificates disclose a test date at all, and 59% of the dated ones are from the last 12 months. "Certified" often means certified once, years ago.
- Under 1% of certificates publish a quantified potency result. The rest certify pass/fail only, so consumers cannot compare actual label-claim accuracy between products.

Methodology
The index aggregates certification records published by independent programs (Informed-Sport, NSF Certified Dietary, NSF Certified for Sport, PowderHaus Labs, Informed-Choice, NSF, USP Verified, Clean Label Project, Blueprint third-party). Records are deduplicated per verification URL, matched to a labeled seller, and refreshed continuously as programs publish new certificates. "Brands" counts sellers with at least two public certificates under a normalized name. Counts reflect the public record only: a brand may run internal testing it does not publish, and this index cannot see it. That gap is the point. Updated 2026-09-01.
